The Chicago Police Department on Monday released a photo of a vehicle they describe as a 2008-2012 GMC Acadia SUV that’s black or dark gray in color with an unknown license plate.

The driver of that vehicle is being sought in connection with the death of Eliseo Mendoza, who was struck and killed last Tuesday.

Mendoza was reportedly on his way to buy some fruit when he was hit near 26th Street and Sawyer Avenue. The vehicle fled the scene south on Sawyer, and Mendoza was later pronounced dead.

The Cook County Medical Examiner said Mendoza’s death was caused by blunt force injuries to the head from a motor vehicle striking a pedestrian.

Mendoza’s family has reportedly offered a $2,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in this case.

Mendoza’s family launched a GoFundMe last week, which has thus far raised more than $4,000.

“From the Mendoza Family, we would like to thank each and one of you for all the love, support, prayers and well wishes,” Mendoza’s granddaughter wrote on the fundraiser page. “We greatly appreciate it. God bless you all.”

Anyone with information about the vehicle is asked to contact the CPD’s Major Accident Investigation Unit at 312-745-4521.
