A full moon on Halloween is a happy coincidence. But Saturday’s full moon is even more remarkable. It happens to be the second full moon of the month, dubbed a blue moon (as in “once in a blue moon”).
The month’s first full moon rose on Oct. 1.
Despite the name, the moon won’t actually look blue, though it will have a colorful companion nearby in the sky. Keep an eye out for Mars, the red planet, which has been particularly bright as of late.
The last blue moon occurred March 31, 2018, and we’ll have an even longer wait between this one and the next, but it’ll be worth it. Come Aug. 31, 2023, we’ll experience a blue moon supermoon (the closest and largest moon of the year).
We’re over the moon just thinking about it.
