As Chicago increasingly reopens for business and pleasure, the question remains how people will move around the city, and whether riders will feel comfortable using public transportation.

Ridership plummeted 80% in the immediate aftermath of the coronavirus shutdown, and April rail ridership — the last month for which data is publicly available — was down nearly 90% compared with the same period last year.

The Chicago Transit Authority has been touting its enhanced cleaning measures, as well as efforts to manage overcrowding. To further reassure riders, the agency will be handing out travel kits at a number of rail stations and bus terminals throughout the week. 

The kits will include a 2-ounce bottle of hand sanitizer and a reusable cloth mask.
