Chicago Bakers, Including a James Beard Winner, Firing Up Their Ovens for #BakersAgainstRacism
Offerings from Publican Quality Meats (publicanquality / Instagram)
In the fight against racism, bakers around the world are firing up their ovens as part of a virtual bake sale to raise funds for organizations that support equality and justice for all.
The Bakers Against Racism campaign, which culminates Saturday, started in Washington, D.C., and has since gone global. A host of Chicago-area bakers have taken up their whisks and spatulas in the cause, professionals and amateurs alike, ranging from Publican’s Greg Wade, a James Beard Award winner, to high schoolers with Instagram followers.
The premise is simple: A baker offers a special item or two for sale, customers place their order, and the sweets are either picked up or delivered on Saturday. Many of the specials are available in limited quantities and some have already sold out.
Each baker has chosen where to send proceeds. Chicago beneficiaries include My Block My Hood My City , Brave Space Alliance , Black Lives Matter Chicago chapter, the Transgender Law Center and Assata’s Daughters , among others.
We’ve rounded up some of the Chicago-area participants. Check Instagram, #bakersagainstracism, for anyone we might have missed.

Cookies and slices of cake or pie can add up to some serious coin. Heather Bodine-Lederman, owner of Pie Pie My Darling vegan bakery, collected more than $4,000 for Brave Space Alliance in just two days of her own fundraiser.
In just TWO DAYS you babes helped us raise $4,105 for @bravespacealliance!!! I’m adding 10% of our sales from the past week to that, so the grand total going to BSA is $4,425! My hands are literally SHAKING I’m so blown away, and so touched. We just picked the winners in my story (and decided to make FOUR rainbow cakes instead of three), and the winners are MEGAN GARCIA, MELISSA RUSHING, BLAIR MCKEE, and CLEA DORUELO! Winners—please email us to coordinate pickup! Thank you all SO much from the bottom of my heart for being a part of this. Truly couldn’t have done it without you and it means the world to know I’m followed/supported by people who actually care and want to make a difference If you didn’t win a cake this time around, know that your contribution is deeply appreciated Please follow @bravespacealliance if you don’t already, and consider signing up to contribute to them monthly. Let’s keep fighting for the rights of our fellow humans. BLACK LIVES MATTER @afrobohemianrhapsody #blacklivesmatter #blacktranslivesmatter #bakersagainstracism
