A Chicago man has been arrested and charged with a felony count of criminal damage to property after he allegedly used a golf club to smash dozens of windows at a Northwest Side elementary school building early Wednesday morning.

Michael Mangan, 36, appeared in bond court Wednesday just hours after Cook County prosecutors allege he broke around 80 windows at Daniel C. Beard Elementary School in Norwood Park.

According to Chicago police, officers observed Mangan breaking windows with the club, but he fled from the area on foot. He was eventually arrested at approximately 1:41 a.m. Wednesday.

Cook County prosecutors said he broke a total of 82 windows, valued at a total of $16,400. During his bond hearing, prosecutors indicated that Mangan confessed, saying he broke the windows because “the school ruined his life.”

Cook County Judge Susana Ortiz ordered an I-bond in the amount of $10,000, meaning Mangan did not have to post any money to be released. He will, however, be held on electronic monitoring while he awaits trial.

“It may be a nonviolent offense, but it resulted in damage over $16,000 to a Chicago Public School,” Ortiz said. “This defendant needs some type of supervision while he’s on bond.”

In a letter to families, Beard Principal Manda Lukic said that it appeared nothing was taken from the school and the only physical damage appears to be to the windows.

"Clean up is under way and we will get the school back to its beautiful self in no time," Lukic said in the letter. "We will let everyone know when they can come back to the school for retrieval of items."

Mangan is due back in court for a hearing on June 10.
