With Vice President Kamala Harris conceding the race for the White House, Illinois Democrats who’d served as surrogates for her on the campaign trail weighed in for the first time on her loss.
Surrounded by Republican candidates running for office in Cook County, Kathy Salvi on Monday invited voters to give down-ballot Republicans “a chance,” even if it meant ignoring the party’s figurehead and nominee for president. “If you don’t like Trump, turn off the TV for four years for heaven’s sake.”
Illinois Republicans say they are still as united about the upcoming election as they were at their national convention in Milwaukee last month, despite surge of enthusiasm for the Democrats’ new presidential candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris.
“It’s an honor to be asked, even if some of those questions are like a colonoscopy,” Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker said of the vetting process.
Republican nominee former President Donald Trump has said he will only accept the results of the Nov. 5 general election if “everything is honest.”
“Well, I'll tell you your blue funk is over,” newly elected chair of the Illinois Republican Party Kathy Salvi said. “We're going to make Illinois red again.”
Attorney Kathy Salvi ran unsuccessfully against incumbent U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth in 2022. Salvi assumes the post July 19, the day after the Republican National Convention wraps in Milwaukee.
On Thursday morning, the Illinois GOP announced the three candidates for the state chair post. The decision comes as a Republican lawmaker is voicing concerns that a leadership change ahead of November’s elections will serve to further harm the minority party’s political chances.
Duckworth, 54, was elected to the Senate in 2016 after serving two terms in the U.S House. Salvi, 63, is a Mundelein lawyer who has never before held elected office.
The Senate candidates faced off in the WTTW studio and wrangled over gun control, abortion and inflation.
