Striking workers at Brookfield Zoo Chicago have reached a tentative agreement with management, ending a two-day walkout, zoo officials and representatives from Teamsters Local 727 announced Wednesday morning.

Grounds, custodial and facilities employees had been on the picket line since Monday after the union and management failed to come to terms on a new contract. Animal care staff had remained on the job but had been expected to join their fellow union members in the walkout Wednesday before the strike was halted.

The new proposal, which needs to be voted on by union members, includes wage increases totaling 20% over the life of the four-year contract, continuation of the 100% employer-paid union healthcare, allowances for additional staff and more, according to a statement from Teamsters Local 727.

“This outcome reflects the strength, unity and determination of our members, and it shows what workers can achieve when they stand together,” said John Coli Jr., secretary-treasurer of Teamsters Local 727.

The zoo will be open to visitors as normal, officials said.

“We are excited to welcome our team members back as we move forward together in our shared dedication to our people, the animals in our care, and the communities we serve,” Dr. Mike Adkesson, president and CEO of Brookfield Zoo Chicago, said in a statement.
