Funeral Details Released for CPD Officer John Bartholomew
Officer John Bartholomew (Chicago Police Department)
The funeral details for Chicago police Officer John Bartholomew, who was killed in a hospital shooting Saturday, have been released.
Visitation will take place Thursday, May 7, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Church, 5649 N. Sheridan Road. A funeral will take place on Friday, May 8, beginning at 10 a.m., also at St. Andrew’s. Internment is private.
Bartholomew, 38, was shot and killed Saturday inside Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital. Alphanso Talley, 26, was charged with first-degree murder in his death and is currently being detained pending trial.
Bartholomew, originally of Evanston, is survived by his wife, Renee Bartholomew, and three children, according to an online obituary.
“John will be remembered as a devoted family man whose life was defined by love, loyalty, and service,” the obituary reads. “He was always the first to step in and help others, known for his generosity and willingness to give without hesitation. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures, including his love for good food, his admiration for Batman, and his unmistakable, contagious laugh that could light up any room.”
Talley was brought to the North Side hospital by Bartholomew and his partner following Talley’s arrest in connection with an armed robbery earlier in the day. While he was in custody, he allegedly told police he was having difficulty breathing because he had ingested multiple bags of drugs before he was detained.

Once at the hospital, Bartholomew uncuffed Talley so he could begin the MRI, at which point Talley allegedly moved quickly toward the end of his bed and grabbed a 10 mm handgun he’d used in the robbery that he concealed under his blanket.
Talley pointed the gun at Bartholomew and fired, striking him in the head, according to prosecutors. As two hospital staffers fled the room, Talley allegedly shot Bartholomew’s partner, striking him in the chin.
Bartholomew’s 57-year-old partner remains in critical condition. Talley, who has an extensive criminal history and was on electronic monitoring, was taken into custody less than 90 minutes later as he hid under the porch of a home near the hospital.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the John Bartholomew Memorial Fund at the National Police Federal Credit Union,1407 W. Washington Blvd., Chicago, Illinois, 60607.
