Lincoln Park Zoo’s baby Eastern black rhino is ready to meet her adoring public.
The calf, born March 19, has spent her first month behind the scenes, spending crucial bonding time with her mom, Kapuki. On Wednesday, caretakers will introduce the little one to her outdoor habitat.
Visitors can greet the calf by name: Hazina (Ha-zee-nah), which translates to “treasured” in Swahili.
The female calf is the third for 20-year-old Kapuki and her first with new papa 21-year-old Utenzi.
Eastern black rhinos are critically endangered in the wild, their population having dropped 98% between 1960 and 1995 due to poaching. Conservation efforts have boosted the rhinos’ numbers to approximately 1,000 in the wild.
Hazina’s birth is the result of the zoo’s participation in the Eastern Black Rhinoceros Species Survival Plan.
