Hey Chicago, we know it’s a holiday but one of the reasons we launched Daily Chicagoan is to get outside, explore this city more deeply and feel closer to this great community we live in. The inaugural Urban Birding Festival is set for Sept. 14-15, with registration open now. The event is designed to highlight the hundreds of species found in the city — from peregrine falcons in the Loop to migratory warblers along the lakefront to year-round occupants of Chicago’s parks and backyards — and all the work being done to create habitat for them.

The main thing that caught our eye here? The Rome Odunze Dog, which was made in partnership with the new Bears rookie wide receiver, features a jalapeno cheddar dog nestled on top of Italian beef, topped with hot giardiniera, cheese crisp crumbles and a “spicy Chicago secret sauce.” You’ll need a napkin (or three).

Through September, nearly 20 butterfly sculptures will be at various Chicago Park District natural areas, from the West Ridge Nature Park to Hegewisch Marsh, from Columbus Park to the Burnham Wildlife Corridor. Another group landed on Michigan Avenue’s Magnificent Mile.

The Newberry Library has an intimate exhibition about legendary Chicago columnist Mike Royko. It’s an introduction to the work of a cranky writer who could crank out quality columns at an amazing rate. The show runs through Sept. 28.
