More Than 40 Student Journalists in Illinois Chosen to Cover Democratic National Convention
(WTTW News)
More than 40 student journalists across 10 high schools in Illinois have been chosen to report on this year’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
The Chicago 2024 Host Committee and the Illinois Journalism Education Association worked to identify student journalists across the state to join the Illinois Youth Press Corps, providing them with opportunities to cover the convention.
Selected student journalists will be fully credentialed to attend the convention and report inside the United Center and McCormick Place.
“We are particularly grateful that our student journalists are being granted the same opportunities as members of the professional media and excited to support them in providing coverage of our government in action for their communities and from their unique perspectives as younger journalists,” Illinois Journalism Education Association President Keith Carlson said in a statement.
The student journalists come from the following high schools:
- Niles West High School
- University of Chicago Laboratory High School
- O’Fallon Township High School
- Christ the King Jesuit College Prep High School
- Kaneland High School
- Walter Payton College Prep
- Naperville Central High School
- Thornwood High School
- Metea Valley High School
- West Chicago Community High School
As part of the program, students will have the opportunity to tour Chicago Public Media and meet with editors and reporters, according to a news release. Students will receive feedback on their pieces by Chicago Sun-Times editors and have the chance to interview journalists at WBEZ and the Sun-Times.
“By providing young people with these unforgettable opportunities, we can ensure that the next generation is ready to shape a brighter, more informed city and state,” Host Committee Executive Director Christy George said in a statement.
The National Journalism Education Association will also work with students across the country to support virtual coverage opportunities for students outside of Illinois.
