The man accused of wounding two Chicago police officers in a shooting over the weekend on the West Side of the city allegedly fired at least eight rounds from a handgun loaded with an extended magazine.

Bruce Lua, 45, was ordered held on $10 million bond Tuesday during a hearing following his arrest on charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery of a peace officer and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

The shooting occurred at 7:23 a.m. Sunday in the 1500 block of South Lawndale Avenue. Minutes earlier, two police officers responded to a ShotSpotter call a few blocks away on West Douglas Boulevard.

When they arrived, the officers saw a witness directing them toward Lua, who the witness said had fired a gun with an extended magazine, Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney James Murphy said during Tuesday’s bond hearing.

The officers saw Lua and began following him on foot “at a distance” for a few blocks, Murphy said, giving him multiple orders to drop his weapon and show his hands. According to Murphy, the officers also “offered the defendant help if he needed it.”

Lua didn’t respond and continued walking away toward 16th Street. Just before he got there, the two officers who were eventually shot arrived at the scene and exited their squad car with their weapons drawn, Murphy said.

They too ordered Lua to show his hands, but Lua allegedly pulled a 9 mm handgun from his sweatshirt and began firing, first at the officer on the passenger side of the vehicle, then at the officer on the driver’s side.

Both of those officers and one of the officers from the initial pursuit returned fire toward Lua, according to Murphy.

One male officer, 28, was struck in the hand, while a second male officer, 26, was hit in the left hip and right shoulder, according to Murphy.

Lua was also shot once in his left leg and collapsed nearby before he was taken into custody.

Both wounded officers were taken to Mt. Sinai hospital where they were treated and released the same day. They became the fifth and sixth CPD officers to be shot in the line of duty so far in 2021. In total, 29 officers have been shot at this year, according to police department data.

The officer struck in the hand had bullet fragments in his hand, but he did not have any broken bones. The other office had a bullet lodged in his armpit. It too did not break any bones or hit any vital organs, but Murphy said he currently needs assistance walking and will require rehabilitation.

According to Murphy, investigators recovered Lua’s handgun, an empty magazine and eight 9 mm shell casings from the scene. The shooting was also captured on body camera footage from all four officers on the scene as well as surveillance cameras in the area, Murphy said.

Lua remains hospitalized due to his injuries and did not appear in court Tuesday. Because of that, Judge Arthur Willis could not grant a petition for no bail filed by Cook County prosecutors.

Instead, Willis said the “most lenient bail I can give” was $10 million. In addition, he set $100,000 bail on a bond violation for Lua, who was already facing two counts of aggravated assault from prior incidents.

Lua is due in court next Monday, when prosecutors will ask that he be held without bail.
