A suburban Maywood woman allegedly ran over and killed an Uber Eats driver as she attempted to steal his van while he made a delivery at Loretto Hospital on Chicago’s West Side early Monday morning.

Montoya Perry, 33, will be detained in the Cook County Jail pending trial after her arrest on felony murder and vehicular hijacking charges following the death of 28-year-old Daniel Figueroa.

According to Cook County prosecutors, Figueroa was dropping off a food order at Loretto Hospital at around 2 a.m. Monday and left his Dodge Caravan running as he went inside to make his delivery.

At the same time, Perry and two others were walking nearby and spotted the vehicle and all three got inside, with Perry getting into the driver’s seat, prosecutors said.

As Figueroa exited the hospital, he saw the group inside the van and began running towards it, as Perry allegedly attempted to speed off. Figueroa grabbed a passenger side door handle and was dragged as Perry continued accelerating away, prosecutors said.

Figueroa then fell to the ground and was run over by the van’s rear passenger tire as Perry allegedly fled in the vehicle, according to prosecutors, who said the entire incident was recorded on surveillance footage.

Minutes later, the Loretto doctor who had ordered food through Figueroa realized the delivery had not been made and went outside, where he found Figueroa lying in a pool of blood, according to prosecutors.

The doctor recognized Figueroa from his photo on the Uber Eats app and called 911 to alert police and paramedics. Figueroa died a short time later.

Police tracked Figueroa’s van through Chicago and the suburbs using license plate readers, eventually locating it parked in Maywood later Monday morning.

Investigators saw Perry arrive in a separate vehicle and get into the van’s driver’s seat about 30 minutes later, prosecutors said. As they approached, Perry got out and allegedly attempted to flee, but was quickly taken into custody.

She later admitted to police that she took Figueroa’s vehicle and saw him running toward her as she drove off, prosecutors said.

A GoFundMe campaign has collected more than $12,000 for Figueroa’s partner and son as of Wednesday afternoon.

“Every day brings new challenges as I try to find a way forward for myself and our child,” Figueroa’s partner wrote on the fundraiser page. “The weight of these responsibilities is overwhelming, and I am doing my best to stay strong for our family.”

Perry is due back in court for a hearing on March 18.
