Vehicle Emissions Testing Self-Service Kiosk Launches at Chicago South DMV

Chicagoans now have another place in the city to complete a vehicle emissions test.
An emissions testing self-service kiosk is available at the Chicago South DMV following a successful mobile testing pilot launched last month, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced Wednesday.
After passing an emissions test, motorists can purchase their vehicle registration sticker at the DMV’s annex building without having to pay the additional $9.50 charged by outside vendors, according to an Illinois Secretary of State’s Office news release.
The emissions testing kiosk is available at the Chicago South DMV, 9901 S. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to noon.
The installation of the kiosk is a partnership with the Illinois secretary of state and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, with the goal of expanding to more locations, according to a news release.
The new kiosk is in addition to two other self-service emissions testing kiosks in the city, which are available 24/7, at 6959 W. Forest Preserve Drive and 2560 W. Cermak Road.
In 2022, the Illinois EPA was tasked with bringing vehicle emissions testing locations back to the city after testing facilities in Chicago closed nearly a decade ago as a cost-cutting measure under former Gov. Bruce Rauner.
Earlier this year, the Illinois EPA reopened its Forest Preserve vehicle emissions testing location at 6959 W. Forest Preserve Drive in Chicago.
Chicago and other major U.S. metropolitan areas, which don’t meet federal air quality standards, are required to test the emissions of residents’ gas-powered vehicles every other year. In Illinois, this applies to residents living in areas near Chicago and St. Louis.
