Chicago police officers fatally shot a man Thursday after he allegedly fled from the scene of an aggravated battery on the city’s far South Side into Indiana, crashed his vehicle and fired shots at police.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the shooting, which occurred around 6 p.m. Thursday after 4th District officers responded to a report of a person with a gun in the 13400 block of South Baltimore Avenue.

According to police, that person was being sought in connection to an aggravated battery and responding officers observed him entering a vehicle and leaving the area.

The man eventually crashed his vehicle near Dearborn Avenue and Gostlin Street in Hammond, Indiana. When CPD officers arrived at that location, the man allegedly fired shots, before police returned fire and struck the man.

He was taken to St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago where he was pronounced dead. Two CPD officers were also taken into a hospital for observation and were listed in good condition.

No other injuries were reported.

Police said one firearm was recovered on scene. The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days.
