Chicago's Winter Parking Ban Takes Effect Sunday

With the calendar turning to December on Sunday, Chicago officials are reminding drivers the city’s overnight parking ban is once again set to take effect.

The winter parking ban will begin at 3 a.m. Sunday and will cover 107 miles of arterial streets across Chicago from 3 a.m. to 7 a.m. each day from Dec. 1st to April 1st. And that ban will remain in place regardless of whether or not there’s actually any snow on the ground.

“The ban helps ensure public safety by allowing emergency vehicles/public transportation to move freely during snowy/icy weather,” the city’s Department of Streets and Sanitation said in a social media post. “Please follow posted signage restrictions.”

Those who ignore the parking restrictions are in for a rude awakening — not only will they face a towing fee of at least $150, they’ll also be hit with a $60 ticket and a $25 daily storage fee for their vehicle.

A separate snow-related parking ban also covers another 500 miles of main city streets and can be activated once there’s at least two inches of snow on the ground, regardless of time or date.

Motorists who are parked in those areas when it snows could be ticketed or towed to facilitate snow clearing operations.

Those who believe their vehicle has been towed as a result of the parking ban can locate their vehicle by calling 311.
