The additional renewal locations are part of a new “Fast Lane” DMV kiosk pilot program that Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced on Thursday.

The Secretary of State’s office is deploying 15 kiosks located in Chicago, the suburbs and downstate at Mariano’s, Jewel-Osco, Kroger and Meijer grocery stores.

The kiosks will print vehicle registration stickers for customers immediately on site, according to a news release about the program. Customers seeking a driver’s license or state ID card renewal will receive a temporary document at the kiosk to use while their new card is mailed to them within 15 business days.

“This is a big step in our ongoing effort to modernize the office and enable Illinoisans to obtain more services online and remotely without having to visit a DMV,” said Giannoulias in a news release. He announced the program at a Mariano’s in the West Loop.

Illinois residents are advised to bring the renewal notice letter they receive in the mail so they can scan the letter’s barcode at the kiosk when renewing their driver’s license or vehicle registration. Residents also have the option of manually entering their registration ID or driver’s license number and renewal notice PIN at the kiosk.

On top of renewal costs, the kiosks charge a $4.95 processing fee and a 2.25% credit card fee, if applicable. Kiosk services are offered in English and Spanish with plans to increase the number of languages available, in addition to the number of services, as the program expands.

New applicants for driver or vehicle services, including those applying for a REAL ID, will still be required to make an in-person DMV visit.

Locations include five Mariano’s and one Jewel-Osco in Chicago, along with grocery stores in Des Plaines, Lombard, Stickney, Oak Lawn, Park Ridge and Flossmoor.

More information about the program and a list of the locations and addresses are available on the Secretary of State site.
