Shootings, Homicides in Chicago in 2024 Remain Down Compared to Last Year Through September: Police
(WTTW News)
The number of shootings and homicides remain down in Chicago this year compared to last, as the city just concluded its least deadly month of September in years.
According to figures published Thursday by the Chicago Police Department, there have been 439 homicides and 1,808 shootings recorded through the first nine months of 2024. Those totals are down 8% and 5%, respectively, compared to the same time last year.
In September alone, Chicago saw 47 homicides — a modest decline from the 49 recorded in September 2023 — but that total is less than half of the 97 homicides recorded in the same month in 2021.
The CPD said this marks the fewest homicides for any single September in the last five years, while the number of homicides, shootings and shooting victims year-to-date are all at the lowest levels since 2019.
The 726 carjackings recorded so far in 2024 are also down 23% compared to the same time last year, according to CPD figures, while police have made 1,289 motor vehicle-related arrests this year.
Last month also marked one year since Larry Snelling was sworn in as Chicago’s police superintendent.
“I have had the honor of leading the Chicago Police Department and the brave men and women who keep our city safe day after day,” Snelling said in a statement. “I look forward to our ongoing partnership with community members as we continue to make our neighborhoods safer for every Chicagoan. I want to thank everyone who has supported the Department over the past year, as well as our officers for their hard work and dedication.”
