Week in Review: CPS Chief Refuses to Resign; Poll Shows Chicagoans Wary of New Taxes
The CEO of Chicago Public Schools Pedro Martinez refuses to resign – ramping up the pressure in a very public battle with Mayor Brandon Johnson.
The mayor says he was elected to transform the city’s schools.
Martinez responds that his resignation would cause a “leadership vacuum and instability.”
Martinez also denies that he wants to close more schools and calls out what he says is a “misinformation campaign” to undermine his leadership.
Meanwhile, as the mayor and CPS search for new revenue to bridge budget deficits, a new polls finds most Chicagoans are against raising new city taxes regardless of what the money might be for.
And once the most powerful politician in Chicago and the longest serving member on the City Council, former Ald. Ed Burke, is now a federal inmate.
