For the first time in two years, Cook County officials have sent out both the first and second installments for an entire property tax year on time.

Property owners’ 2021 tax bills were released more than 150 days late amid months of bureaucratic wrangling and finger pointing among Cook County officials.

Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle’s office said the ability of officials to release property tax bills on time “marks a significant milestone” and is the result of dedicated efforts by Cook County officials.

The delays began with the second installment of property tax bills in 2021, with Assessor Fritz Kaegi blaming the late bills on the Cook County Board of Review for not helping upgrade the assessor’s computer system. But Board of Review member Larry Rogers Jr. said Kaegi was at fault for not using the old system, as well as the new system, to avoid delays.

Bills will be available at cookcountytreasurer.com by July 2 and should hit mailboxes shortly afterward.
