Deshawn Lucas, 33, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon, as well as individual counts of aggravated battery and burglary. He was scheduled to appear in court for a detention hearing Wednesday, but that has been pushed back to next week.

The shooting occurred around 4:15 a.m. in the first block of East Walton Street as Chicago police officers were responding to an attempted burglary at the nearby Prada store at the corner of Oak and Rush streets.

According to the Civilian Office of Police Accountability — which investigates allegations of police misconduct — the incident began when an individual intentionally drove a stolen vehicle through the window of the business. Multiple people then allegedly entered the store and fled the scene with stolen merchandise in separate vehicles.

Those officers encountered multiple people, at least one of whom was armed, before there was an exchange of gunfire, according to Police Superintendent Larry Snelling.

The officer — a 55-year-old man who has been with the CPD for 17 years — was struck in the leg, and his injuries are not considered life threatening. Lucas was also struck multiple times and was undergoing surgery as of Monday morning.

Body-worn camera and third-party video captured both the initial interaction and the shooting, according to COPA.

Snelling said Monday that police were searching for multiple other people they believe were involved in the alleged burglary.
