41-Year-Old Woman Among 3 People Killed by Gunfire Over Weekend in Chicago: Police

A 41-year-old woman fatally shot in a drive-by shooting that wounded four others early Sunday was one of three people killed by gunfire over the weekend in Chicago.

According to Chicago Police Department figures, 40 people were shot in 32 separate shooting incidents between 6 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday. That included Ashley Griggs, 41, who was killed in West Garfield Park.

According to police, Griggs and four other people were shot just after 2 a.m. Sunday in the 4000 block of West Washington Avenue. Griggs was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at a local hospital. A 38-year-old woman and three men ages 38, 39 and 42 were also shot and were each hospitalized in fair condition.

One of those victims told police the shooter was traveling in a vehicle when he opened fire. Griggs is reportedly the mother of Ohio State freshman wide receiver Carnell Tate.

A 59-year-old man was fatally shot at around 5:15 p.m. Saturday in the 5000 block of South Talman Avenue. He was near an alley in that area when two people approached and at least one of them fired shots. The victim was struck in the shoulder and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

A 32-year-old man was killed in the 1000 block of North California at around 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Police officers responding to a report of shots fired found the man outside on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. He was later pronounced dead.

In addition to the three people who were fatally shot, a man was also stabbed to death in Uptown.

The victim was in the 4600 block of North Sheridan Road just after 7:30 p.m. Saturday when he was stabbed with a sharp object multiple times by an unknown offender. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but later died of his injuries.
