In politics, Chicago’s mayoral race is up for grabs as campaign commercials blanket the airwaves. Some ads are paid for by dark money with less than two weeks to go until Election Day and early voting open citywide. Mayor Lori Lightfoot targeted Brandon Johnson in campaign ads and at the last mayoral forum.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is coming to Elmhurst on Monday to talk to Chicago’s Fraternal Order of Police. U.S. Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García is using the visit to attack Paul Vallas, who is endorsed by the FOP.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker gave his combined state of the state and budget address Thursday with millions of dollars focused on early education.
In other news, Robert Crimo Jr., the father of the man charged in the Highland Park 4th of July parade shooting, is himself charged with felonies for sponsoring his son’s gun ownership application. Meanwhile, the Highland Park Independence Day celebrations will look very different this year to honor the fallen, as well as help the grieving community mark the one-year anniversary of the massacre that killed seven and wounded more than 50.
There was another school shooting this week at Michigan State University on the 15th anniversary of the Northern Illinois University shooting that left five dead.
