In October, the Chicago City Council approved a $31.5 million plan to send checks to the city’s families most in need, promising immediate assistance as what’s been touted as the largest pilot program for guaranteed income in the country.
Except, no assistance has yet gone out, and none likely will for the foreseeable future.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s administration says it needs time to get the program right, while advocates worry that the clock is ticking.
