US Rep. Rodney Davis on Afghanistan Evacuation, Potential Gubernatorial Run

U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis is blasting the United States’ exit from Afghanistan, as top defense officials say U.S. personnel and Afghan allies will continue to be evacuated from the country over the next several days.

“This is a debacle of epic proportions that was terribly executed by the Biden administration,” Davis said. “The goal was to get 2,500 troops out, and we now have thousands more going in just to evacuate those first 2,500 and Americans and allies.”

On Tuesday, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley defended the withdrawal, saying original predictions for the collapse of the Afghan government had ranged from weeks to months and years.

“There was nothing that I or anyone else saw that indicated a collapse of this army and this government in 11 days,” Milley said.

Davis said he’d like to question top military leaders on how U.S. intelligence predictions were so wrong, and how the Taliban gained ground so quickly.

“This is a frustrating moment that will go down in American history as one of the biggest strategic blunders of our military, and of a president, in our lifetime,” he said.

Back in Illinois, Davis has for months been touted as a possible candidate to run against Gov. J.B. Pritzker in 2022.

Davis says his preference would be to return to Congress but he’ll consider running if Democrats draw new congressional districts that disadvantage his chance for reelection.

“My political future depends upon the Democrats who have supermajorities in Springfield and upon Gov. Pritzker deciding whether or not to keep his promise of not signing another legislatively drawn, gerrymandered political map,” Davis said. “I’m going to decide what my future holds … based upon the political battlefield that the Democrats control. And when they release it, I’ll make my decisions.”
