Big Shoulders Deal Directs $92M to 30 Catholic Schools in Chicago

A 10-year deal between a Chicago nonprofit and the Archdiocese of Chicago will pump more than $90 million into 30 Catholic schools located primarily on the city’s West and South sides.

Under the agreement announced Wednesday, Big Shoulders Fund, a nonprofit that provides scholarships and teacher training to Catholic schools, is investing $47.5 million while the archdiocese contributes $44.9 million.

The schools receiving funding will remain within the archdiocese school system, but Big Shoulders Fund will assume “a leadership role in helping school principals manage toward a vibrant future,” according to a press release about the deal.

The agreement and funding takes effect immediately.

Jim Rigg, the superintendent of Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Chicago, and Josh Hale, president and CEO of Big Shoulders Fund, appear on “Chicago Tonight” to discuss the agreement.
