The 1st District of Illinois encompasses parts of Cook and Will Counties, extending from the South Side of Chicago into the southwest suburbs. The district is considered a minority-majority district, with more than half of the district identified as African American. President Barack Obama once ran for the Democratic nomination for Congress in the 1st District in 2000, but lost to Rep. Bobby Rush in the primaries. Rep. Rush has held office for nearly 20 years. |
