Javier Galindo and Lidia Galindo Corral have welcomed artists from all over the world to the Apollo’s 2000 Theater in Little Village for nearly 35 years. The building is now being designated a Chicago landmark.

The fire station at 2358 S. Whipple St. was in use for more than a century but has been vacant since 2011 when a new fire station was built two blocks away. The Chicago Historic Resources Survey determined the two-story structure is significant in the context of the surrounding community.

The city’s Commission on Chicago Landmarks voted in favor of a preliminary landmark recommendation for St. Adalbert Church. This starts a lengthy eight-step approval process, which ends in a vote by City Council on the designation.

More than 20 years after residents began their fight to save the stair-step limestone wall at Promontory Point on the south lakefront, the Point was declared an official Chicago Landmark during Wednesday’s City Council meeting.

The Chicago Landmarks Commission voted unanimously to allow Wrigley Field to undergo a $575 million renovation and expansion that has caused considerable controversy between the Cubs owners and rooftop.

The $500 million plan to modernize Wrigley Field got the green light Thursday from the Commission on Chicago Landmarks, despite some objections from Lakeview Ald. Tom Tunney.
