Chicago Police Officer Shoots, Kills Person in Car That Intentionally Struck CPD Vehicles, CPD Says
(WTTW News)
A Chicago police officer shot and killed a person early Saturday morning in Austin after a car intentionally struck two CPD vehicles, injuring two officers, department officials said Saturday morning.
A second person was wounded by police during the incident that began at 3:46 a.m. Saturday, according to a Chicago Police Department statement. That person suffered unknown injuries and was taken to an area hospital, officials said.
A third person fled, and has not been arrested, officials said.
The injured officers suffered non-life threatening injuries, officials said.
The shooting is under investigation by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, officials said. The person who was killed has not been identified by authorities.
The incident began when officers were called to the 5500 block of west Thomas Street to investigate a burglary and attempted to stop people they saw getting into a dark-colored sedan and drive away, officials said.
Officers “encountered” the car six blocks away, near Chicago and Waller avenues, where it “intentionally struck two marked Chicago Police vehicles, pinning an officer who discharged their weapon” striking one person, according to a CPD statement.
Officers provided first-aid to two people, one of whom died at Stroger Hospital, officials said. A gun was recovered in the car, officials said.
A third person fled the car and was chased by officers on foot, officials said. That person discarded a gun, which was recovered by police, but has not been arrested, officials said.
The officers involved will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days, in accordance with department policy.
CPD officers have now shot 16 people, killing eight, less than nine months into 2025, more than in all of last year, records show. In 2024, CPD officers shot 12 people, killing six, records show.
