Week in Review: City Council Approves Ethics Reforms; ‘Snap Curfew’ Veto Stands
South Side Weekly obtained calls from a federal immigration facility that was the site of protests last month where immigrants were told to appear for a routine check-in and then detained. Chicago police were on the scene, raising questions about whether their participation violated the city’s welcoming city ordinance.
The Chicago City Council approved a new ethics reform measure aimed at stopping the Law Department from interfering in investigations that risk embarrassment or political consequences for city leaders.
After a debate that dragged on for weeks, a City Council vote to override the mayor’s veto of a so-called snap curfew ordinance failed.
Another proposal before the City Council this week would have allowed coach houses, granny flats and basement units to be built around the city. Two alderpeople used a procedural move to delay the vote.
And the Chicago Park District completed its investigation into a fatal shooting at Douglass Park that left one teen dead and another wounded. The lifeguard charged in the shooting didn’t have any formal complaints, though patrons and colleagues had raised concerns about his behavior.
