Scholarship Applications Open For Low-Income Chicago Students Attending College, Trade Schools

Applications are open for a city scholarship program that aims to provide financial support for low-income students in Chicago pursuing college or vocational training.

Community Services Block Grant scholarships range from $1,000 to $5,000.

Applicants must be Chicago residents, be enrolled as a full-time student in the fall at any Illinois college, university or vocational training program, and meet income eligibility requirements.

High school graduates and GED recipients are welcome to apply.

Eligible programs include vocational training, trade schools, community colleges, four-year universities and accredited graduate programs located in Illinois. Online programs from Illinois-based institutions also qualify.

Applicants must submit official transcripts, an acceptance letter, proof of family household income, financial aid awards, proof of Chicago residency, copies of Illinois driver’s licenses or IDs of family members, a personal essay and a letter of recommendation.

Applications close on July 31 at 5 p.m. Scholarship decisions will be announced in the fall.

A total of $140,000 in scholarship funds are available this fall, according to a city spokesperson for the Department of Family and Support Services. Funds are provided by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
