Chicago just concluded its least deadly single month in more than a decade, as April 2025 also saw fewer homicides than any such month in more than 60 years.

The 20 homicides recorded throughout the city last month were the fewest for any month in Chicago since February 2015 while also marking the fewest for any April since 1962.

“Crime is down in Chicago, it continues to fall,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said at an unrelated news conference Monday. “We’re gonna continue to show up, but it’s not just policing, it can’t be policing alone.”

Last month’s homicide total was almost half that of April 2024 (38 homicides) and was down more than 60% compared to April 2023 (53), according to Chicago Police Department data.

Throughout last month, 124 people were shot in 109 separate shooting incidents, totals that were down 40% and 37%, respectively, compared to the same month last year.

There have been 116 homicides recorded in total so far in 2025, which marks a 24% decline compared to the first four months of 2024. The total number of shootings (404) and shooting victims (461) in 2025 are also each down more than 30% compared to last year.

Robberies in 2025 are also down 36% year-to-date while motor vehicle thefts are down 30% and carjackings are down 54% year-to-date, according to the CPD.

“Public safety is top priority,” Johnson said, “and we’re gonna continue to drive violence down in the city of Chicago.”
