“We didn’t plan on making it for twenty years,” said festival founder Michael “Riot Mike” Petryshyn in a news release. “We planned on making it through one weekend. But here we are - still loud, still weird, still building something bigger than we ever meant to.”

Riot Fest started as a punk rock festival that was held across different venues in the city. The festival was held at Humboldt Park before eventually moving to Douglass Park on the West Side, where it has been since 2015.

Riot Fest recently secured a multi-year agreement with the Chicago Park District to remain in Douglass Park through at least 2027, with more money being generated for the park.

The decision to remain in Douglass Park drew both support and criticism.

Riot Fest has faced ongoing pushback from some community advocates who have raised concerns about issues such as park damage, noise and the festival cutting off access to community green space for surrounding residents.

Last year, Riot Fest was held in Douglass Park as originally planned after festival organizers reversed their decision to hold the festival at SeatGeek Stadium in suburban Bridgeview.
