Northerly Island Visitor Center Is Reopened to the Public After 18-Month Restoration

Meigs Field was famously bulldozed back in 2003, but the one-time airport’s terminal is back in business — as a Chicago Park District visitor center.
The visitor center, at 1521 S. Linn White Drive, reopened Monday after closing for repairs in November 2023 following damage from a fire. The lobby has been restored, and the building’s new windows have been covered in bird-friendly film to prevent collisions, according to the Park District.
The public will once again have access to the building for programming, restrooms and shelter from the elements.
The visitor center sits between Northerly Island’s concert pavilion and the park’s natural area. Its hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, closed on weekends.
