Week in Review: More Democrats Call for Biden to End Campaign; Illinois GOP Names New Chair
President Joe Biden’s news conference performance doesn’t settle worried Democrats as more members of the Illinois congressional delegation defect from the president’s reelection campaign.
A hot mic catches Gov. J.B. Pritzker wavering on his steadfast support of Biden’s reelection bid — which Pritzker tries to spin.
Democrats have six weeks until the Democratic National Convention in Chicago to figure out the ticket as fundraising slows and at least one high-end fundraiser is canceled.
Meanwhile, concerns abound about security and protests outside the DNC, as the FOP president warns of unrest among Chicago police if days off are canceled for the DNC.
On the other side of the aisle, the GOP faithful prep for the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee next week, a city that Trump last month called “horrible.”
The Illinois GOP is heading to that convention with a new chair, Kathy Salvi, after Don Tracy announced last month he was resigning over the direction of the party and in-fighting.
Trump still hasn’t named his vice president just days from his RCN coronation.
In other news, former Ald. Ed Burke, now a convicted felon, loses his generous pension minutes after his sentencing.
A U.S. Supreme Court ruling could upend the convictions of the “ComEd Four” found guilty of a conspiracy to bribe then-Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan to benefit ComEd. Despite that ruling, both prosecutors and Madigan’s defense attorneys say that an October trial is still in play.
Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduces articles of impeachment against Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito over a series of potential ethical and tax law violations.
