Those numbers are both significantly higher than last year, when three people were killed and 29 others were shot. In 2020, 10 people were killed over the holiday weekend.

Police Superintendent David Brown said the level of violence seen this weekend was similar to what has been recorded in Chicago over previous Memorial Days during the past decade. Despite the dozens of shootings, when asked to grade his department's performance over the weekend, Brown gave officers an “A for bravery, A for courage and dedication, (and) running toward danger A-plus.”

Brown blamed many of the shootings on personal arguments that escalated because someone involved had a firearm with them.

“We’re awash in guns here and in every major city,” he said during a press conference Tuesday. “It’s past time to get some significant, real gun reform in this country.”

According to Brown, police officers recovered 75 guns on Monday alone, and gun arrests were up 69% over the past few days compared to Memorial Day weekend last year.

A 42-year-old man was fatally shot in the head early Saturday morning in the 2400 block of West 63rd Street. Police said the shooting occurred at around 1:30 a.m. and the man was taken to Advocate Christ Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Two men, ages 29 and 38, died after a Saturday evening shootout in the 5500 block of South Bishop Street. According to police, the men each pulled out a firearm and began shooting at the other. Each man was struck, and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where they died.

Police said a 24-year-old man was fatally shot at around 1 a.m. Sunday morning in the 5700 block of South Carpenter Street. He was standing on the sidewalk when an unknown man opened fire, striking the victim in the head and body.

A 33-year-old man was killed as he drove his sedan in the 4200 block of West Madison Street at around 6:40 a.m. Sunday. The man was struck by gunfire and continued driving until he crashed into a road median.

A 69-year-old man was killed and three others were shot just before 10:30 p.m. Sunday at a home in the 4400 block of West Walton Street. The man who died was struck in the arm and torso. Other victims included a 27-year-old man shot in the buttocks, a 45-year-old man shot in the torso and foot, and a 25-year-old man shot in the leg. A SWAT team was called and eventually arrested a 23-year-old at the home in connection with the shooting.

Brown said that shooting followed a domestic incident, and that one family member killed another family member over a “personal argument.”

A 31-year-old man was killed inside a residence in the 6900 block of South Green Street. Police said the man was inside the home when he was shot in the face just after 2:45 p.m. Monday. He died on scene.

Just after 5 p.m. Monday evening, a 26-year-old man was shot multiple times in the 8600 block of South Aberdeen Street. He was taken to Advocate Christ Hospital in critical condition, but later died.

Three men were shot in the 1300 block of East 93rd Street just before 7:45 p.m. Monday. The men were standing on a sidewalk when someone opened fire. A 25-year-old was killed, and two other men ages 26 and 27 were hospitalized with gunshot wounds to the chest and body.

Officers also arrested 13 people and seized 11 guns at North Avenue Beach Monday. Police said some of those arrested had thrown glass bottles, and in one case a pineapple, at officers who were at the scene.
