A 58-year-old Chicago man has been charged with a misdemeanor after he allegedly attacked Ald. James Cappleman (46th Ward ) in Uptown over the weekend.

According to the Chicago Police Department, Tony Landers has been charged with a single count of aggravated assault stemming from the Saturday night incident near Racine and Leland avenues.

In a statement published Sunday, Cappleman said he was responding to a report of some intoxicated individuals in that area. Landers was allegedly one of the men at the scene, and when Cappleman arrived, he struck the alderman in the head multiple times with a blunt object, according to police.

Cappleman said that he is “completely fine” and suffered only “very minor” injuries. In his statement, he also indicated that he knows Landers and had “sat with him numerous times to help him address his addiction issues.”

“The community suffers when this type of behavior takes over a street corner,” Cappleman said in his statement. “Many residents who live near the intersection of Leland and Racine do not feel safe walking down the sidewalk in their neighborhood while this activity is happening. We must remain mindful of what these individuals and families are going through as well.”

Asked about the incident Monday, police Superintendent David Brown declined to comment, saying that Cappleman’s own statement “would suffice.”
