Dangers Facing Albinos Exposed in New Film

Albinos in Sub-Saharan Africa are the victims of depraved superstitions that plague the region.

Some believe that sacrificing or dismembering a child with albinism will bring them riches; others think HIV/AIDS is cured by having unprotected sex with an albino.

"Equal Under God," a new documentary produced by local filmmakers, is set in Uganda. The impoverished East African country is rife with alarming myths targeting those born with albinism.

It's there that Ogik Peter, a 26-year-old albino, is educating communities and raising awareness for the rights of others living with the skin condition. He mentors Rachel and Sharik, two teenagers whose lives painfully reflect the struggle of growing up with albinism.

With the outreach efforts of his small nonprofit, Source of the Nile Union of Persons with Albinism (SNUPA), Peter hopes to make a better life for the next generation of albinos in Uganda and beyond.

The film will air Friday, January 15 at 10:30 p.m. on WTTW. It was directed and produced by Evan Garcia, Andersen Xia and Abigail Hodgson as part of their final masters project for Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.

Garcia – full disclosure – is also an associate digital producer for "Chicago Tonight." He joins us to discuss the documentary.
