Vatican Report Signals Shift on Morals, Values

Draft Report Encourages Acceptance of Gays, Unconventional Families

On Monday, the Vatican released a preliminary report by an international assembly of Roman Catholic bishops that calls for the church to welcome and accept gay people, cohabitating couples, divorced and remarried couples, as well as children of less traditional families. The report is only a draft and signals a change in tone toward these groups rather than a change in doctrine. The Rev. Donald Senior, president emeritus of Catholic Theological Union, and Mary Anne Hackett of Catholic Citizens of Illinois discuss the preliminary report and its implications.
