Common Core Faces Pushback

Chicago Tonight focuses on how CPS has implemented the Common Core State Standards. We visit a school where Common Core is in place and the teachers and principal support the standards. We also look at the growing opposition to Common Core.

The Chicago Teachers Union recently passed a resolution opposing Common Core. Across the country, four states have now opted out from using the Common Core State Standards. There is even more concern about the new assessment tests that align with the CCSS. CPS has recently decided not to use the new test for teacher, principal or school evaluations next year. Common Core has now become a political football with opposition from the right and the left. Though most educators still say the CCSS are necessary to improve American education.
