Preservationists have lost their battle to save historic St. James Catholic Church in Bronzeville. Demolition on the 133-year-old church began Wednesday. The Archdiocese says repairing the the building is cost-prohibitive. Parishioners have been promised a new church about a block away. However, there is no timeline for when the new church will be built. The archdiocese says it plans to renovate the auditorium parishioners have been using for worship for the time being.
