O Kent Mercado

Candidate for US House - 11th District

Candidate Q&A

Why are you running?

To bring back sanity; I have talked to thousands of people who want to focus on kitchen table issues and not polarizing ones. I bring new ideas and perspectives:  I believe that I can bring a unique voice to Congress (your voice) and contribute new ideas and solutions to the nation's problems.

How has your district been impacted by the migrant crisis and what do you think should be done?

The migrant crisis is challenging since most do not qualify for asylum. Humanitarian aid temporary housing is needed now, but education the key. The migrants have been sold a false promise.

What do you think immigration reform in Congress should look like?

We are a nation of immigrants and, as such, we welcome all that come through the legal and proper channels. There are many channels to enter, live, and work in our nation, such as visas for H1 (technical) and H2 (agricultural) workers and asylum in special and limited circumstances (currently only 25,000 annually). We need to de-incentivize illegal border crossings and foster legal and proper immigration. First close the border, whether physically or electronically, and by enforcement of the laws already on the book.

How important is bipartisanship to you and what issues have you worked on across the aisle or with people who don't uniformly share your beliefs?

This is the main reason that I am running! Congress is made up of people from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, and we need to work together. There is always room for more diversity of thought and perspective, and I believe that we can address almost every issue.

What action, if any, do you want to see next on abortion access after the Dobbs decision?

I am a constitutionalist Republican and after Dobbs this is now a state matter.  Therefore, no federal actions or intervention needed.
