Candidate Statement

Hello, my name is Alice Hu. I appreciate you taking a moment to hear my story, and why I am running for Cook County Commissioner.

I grew up in communist China. As a young girl, I was always eager to find something better.

I found the answer in the promise of America, where I have lived the American Dream like so many other immigrants before me.

I have lived in District 12 for more than 20 years. I earned an MBA from North Park University and have been working as a global supply chain executive for 20 years. I also own a family-run small business for over 10 years in District 12.

I am running because this is my home and I am fed up with the one-party rule that plays politics more than solving the real problems that citizens face every day.

Issues like out-of-control crime, high taxes and corrupt government.

Not soda pop taxes and resolutions to defund the police.

As a business leader, I control budgets of hundreds of millions of dollars and solve problems. And as a small business owner, I know how important it is to listen and to serve the public.

But, most importantly, I will be an independent voice for common-sense policies for people like you and me — ordinary citizens who just want the government to work.

If you are like me, you think we should expect more and demand better from our county government. I'm Alice Hu and I'm asking for your vote for Cook County commissioner.

Candidate Q&A

Why are you running?

In the private sector, I make investment decisions to maximize value to shareholders. Why can't government do the same for taxpayers and residents of Cook County? I am running because I cannot stand for the levels of out-of-control crime, high taxes, and corruption that we experience in Cook County.

What does this office do well, and what needs fixing?

The Cook County Board administrates a $9 billion budget each year, generally to the benefit of all citizens. Unfortunately, the politics of one-party rule play to heavily into issues like county pensions, taxing structures, and public safety. I will fight to remove politics from the County Board and hold myself and others accountable to a higher standard.

What is the most pressing issue facing your constituents and how do you plan on addressing it?

While high taxes and corruption are on residents mind, the number one issue by far is out-of-control crime. The County Board is directly and personally responsible for allowing the State's Attorney's office to implement progressive, politically-driven policies that make our neighbors less safe and secure. I will hold all officials to the highest standards to prosecute criminals and keep our communities safe.

What specific steps would you take to ensure your office is accessible and responsive to your constituents?

My campaign website prominently lists my phone number (312-834-4423) and allows anyone to contact me at any time. Unlike most politicians, I will be accessible with regular office hours to hear and address concerns directly. I will not "hide behind the office". Instead, I will apply the same skills I use every day to get to the root cause of issues, develop data-driven solutions, and hold everyone accountable for high performance standards.
