Background
Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee for president after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race in July following a poor debate performance. The president quickly endorsed Harris, who secured the party’s nomination at the Democratic National Convention in August. She made history as the first Black and South Asian woman to be a major party presidential nominee. Harris is a former U.S. senator, former California attorney general and former San Francisco district attorney. She chose as her running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.
Harris is running on a platform of protecting fundamental freedoms and strengthening democracy. She supports abortion rights and has promised to sign any legislation from Congress that would restore the right to abortion access across the U.S. Harris also vowed to address the national housing shortage, lower the cost of rent and make homeownership more attainable; she proposed offering up to $25,000 in down payment assistance to first-time homebuyers. Harris said the U.S. border needs to be secure; she believes in bringing back a bipartisan border security bill and supports immigration reform that includes earned pathways to citizenship.
