The pup’s name — Seldovia — was revealed Wednesday, and it will forever tie him to the village where he was found. Seldovia, Alaska, is a small hamlet located on the southern Kenai Peninsula, a region known for its salmon fishing.

Members of Seldovia Village Tribe spotted the otter pup in distress in October 2023 and called in wildlife rescuers to bring the pup to safety. Villagers have continued to follow the pup’s progress as he traveled to Shedd, and thanks to virtual encounters, they’ve even visited with Seldovia as he’s settled into his new home.

“The name Seldovia was chosen by the children of Seldovia, Alaska, reflecting their connection to and appreciation for nature. We are excited to see this pup thrive and represent the community of Seldovia, Alaska, at Shedd Aquarium,” Seldovia Village Tribe President and CEO Crystal Collier said in a statement.

Now nearly 6 months old, Seldovia is beginning to get to know the other otters at the Shedd, all of them also rescues. So far, he seems to have bonded most with Luna and Watson and is starting introductions with Suri and Willow. Seldovia continues to have the choice to be on exhibit or behind the scenes, according to aquarium officials.
