Candidate Statement

Hello. I am Alderman Walter Burnett, Jr. – Alderman of the 27th Ward.

I have humbly served the 27th Ward with pride.

During my tenure and with your help, we have changed the 27th Ward for the better.

Our Ward has become an economic engine for the City.

We’ve increased housing, from market-rate to affordable options, and ushered in new businesses like Boeing, Google, Groupon, McDonald’s, Mars, Wrigley, and many other companies of varying sizes.

There are new grocery stores and retail stores in neighborhoods across the 27th Ward, including Pete’s, Jewels, Mariano’s, Aldi, and Target.

We’ve generated thousands of jobs and held numerous job fairs.

We have built new schools, upgraded and created new parks and added new L stations.

We’ve welcomed new movie theatres, a children’s theatre, together with other family-oriented entertainment and recreational places.

We have seen continuous re-development in areas where the Cabrini Green, Henry Horner and Rockwell Gardens housing projects once stood.

We’ve kept the community updated on vital information through robo-calls, emailing weekly newsletters, hosting public meetings, and working with local community-based groups and organizations.

I have made myself accessible to the community twice a week in the evenings, offering one-on-one personal meetings during Ward Nights.

But we’re not done yet, there’s still more to do, along with filling in vacant lots and creating additional jobs.

I thank God and you for the opportunity to serve as Alderman of the 27th Ward and I pray that I am allowed to continue.

Thank you, Happy New Year, and may God bless us all.
