According to the National Weather Service, the average first 90-degree day is June 5, and the normal temperature for this time of year is 76 degrees.

The heat will stick around the rest of the week, though it will be cooler along the lakefront.

Due to the high temperatures, city officials issued a reminder to landlords about new air conditioning requirements, put in place in 2022 after three women died in a Rogers Park senior living facility.

Temperatures in the women’s apartments reportedly soared above 100 degrees as the landlord kept heat running instead of switching to A/C even with outdoor air temperatures in the 90s.

Buildings operated as “housing for older persons,” with 100 or more apartments, or more than 80-feet tall must provide A/C in all apartments or have an air-conditioned common space whenever Chicago’s heat index tops 80 degrees.

People can call 3-1-1 if their home is dangerously hot, to request a senior well-being check or to find the nearest cooling center.
