After firing a gun at bystanders on the street, a naked woman stole a Chicago police squad car, nearly killing an officer in the process, before fleeing the scene and crashing into multiple other cars Monday morning, Cook County prosecutors alleged Wednesday.

Whitley Temple, 34, will be held on $2 million cash bail after her arrest on a half dozen charges including attempted murder of a peace officer, aggravated battery, and vehicular hijacking. She was not present for a court hearing Wednesday morning, as she’s still receiving medical treatment at Stroger Hospital following the car crash.

During that hearing, Assistant State’s Attorney James Murphy described a chaotic series of events that began Monday in West Garfield Park.

Witnesses saw Temple running out of a residence naked that morning, before she allegedly pulled a gun from a purse and fired shots at those witnesses. She then got into her vehicle and drove down an alleyway where she struck a parked AT&T truck, Murphy said.

Temple then allegedly struck the driver of that truck before she ran back screaming into her own vehicle and drove off into another alleyway in the 4300 block of West Adams Street. Surveillance video captured her getting out of her vehicle, putting on a pair of shorts, and attempting to gain entry into other vehicles in that area, Murphy said.

Just after 9:30 a.m., a 47-year-old Chicago police officer responded to a report of shots allegedly fired by Temple near the 4400 block of West Jackson, and found Temple lying in the street. After the officer exited his car and called an ambulance for her, Temple allegedly stood up, began saying the officer’s name out loud repeatedly, and attempted to get into the driver’s side of his squad car.

The officer grabbed Temple’s arm to stop her, but she said “Let me go, this has nothing to do with you,” and continued into the vehicle, according to Murphy. She then allegedly put the squad car in reverse and drove backwards, dragging the officer and pinning him between the squad car and another vehicle before driving away.

Temple was seen on video crashing the car into another vehicle before she got onto the I-290 interstate, where she was recorded going up to 97 mph while weaving in and out of traffic, according to Murphy.

She eventually got off at Sacramento Avenue, while still driving at 76 mph, and crashed into five other occupied vehicles before attempting to flee on foot, Murphy said. Responding officers then arrested her half a block from that crash.

The injured officer received six stitches to the back of his head, and Murphy said it was a “miracle” he wasn’t killed in the crash.

“Her intent is absolutely clear what she is trying to do,” Murphy said. “It is really a miracle that this officer is still alive based on what she did.”

Temple was taken to Stroger Hospital, where a preliminary exam showed that she tested positive for cannabinoids and benzodiazepine, according to Murphy.

During Wednesday’s hearing, Temple’s defense attorney Javaron Buckley claimed his client had been the victim of a sexual assault just before the incident Monday, though he did not elaborate further.

“She got into the car to escape the circumstances she was facing,” he said.

A hearing in this case is scheduled for June 21.
