According to police, several people were at a gathering inside a home in the 6200 block of South Morgan Street when shots were fired following an argument. The shooting occurred at roughly 5:42 a.m. and four victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police could not immediately provide the names or ages of those killed, but none appear to be juveniles. A 25-year-old man and a 41-year-old man who were each shot in the back of the head were taken to Christ Hospital in unknown condition, according to police.

A 23-year-old man and another woman were hospitalized in critical condition. A 2-year-old girl was also taken to an area hospital “out of an abundance of caution,” but did not appear to sustain any injuries.

Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said there was a round of gunfire reported at the home around 2 a.m., and then more shots fired between 5:30-5:45 a.m. He also said the CPD has received complaints about the same residence in the past.

“There’s been disturbance calls at that particular location, but overall the block is quiet,” he said. “No police activity that describes what happened overnight, so there’s no shootings or, you know, other types of disturbances.”

Those calls ususally involved loud music or parties, according to Brown.

Brown said a drum magazine was recovered at the scene, but a firearm was not.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot called the shooting a “tragedy that’s ripped apart families and inflicted intense trauma on several individuals” and said the White House reached out to offer support Tuesday morning.

“I am grateful for the Biden administration,” she said. “They've been great partners with us, but we all have more to do.”

Lightfoot said the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office was “still at work” and detectives had had just “limited contact” with the crime scene, as of about 9:45 a.m. Tuesday. While the details of this shooting remain unclear, Lightfoot pointed to the flow of illegal firearms into Chicago as an ongoing cause of gun violence in the city.

She again called for federal assistance to help Chicago and other cities address these issues, calling it a “national problem.”

“When guns are so porous that they can come across our borders with such ease every single day in Chicago, we know that we have to have a multi-jurisdictional national solution to this horrible plague of gun violence,” she said.

No one is currently in custody, according to police.

“Circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation,” the CPD said.
