Folk Legend John Prine Wins Pair of Posthumous Awards at the Grammys

Legendary singer-songwriter John Prine was honored with a pair of posthumous awards at Sunday night’s Grammy Awards ceremony.

Prine’s “I Remember Everything” won best American roots song and best American roots performance. The song was movingly performed by Brandi Carlile during the award show’s “In Memoriam” segment.

Prine died from the coronavirus in April 2020, just months after receiving a lifetime achievement Grammy.

In an interview with “CBS This Morning” on Monday, Prine’s widow, Fiona, said of the posthumous awards: “I felt him with me yesterday, it was pretty powerful. He would have been so happy. He took great pride in his work, he would have been very proud.”

One of the most influential talents to emerge from Chicago’s folk music scene, Prine famously began writing songs to fight off boredom while working as a postal carrier in his hometown of Maywood.

“We lost a lot when we lost John,” said Fiona Prine. “If you want to think about him and remember him, play a song.”
